September Retreat

In the Front Garden

September is one of my favourite months of the year. Starring in this month is an annual quilt retreat that I have gone to for the past 8 years. Number 9 is only a few weeks away and I am working on blocks to share with my fellow retreaters. It all began in December 2002. Our hostess for this retreat had wanted to learn to quilt during her time in Powell River. Busy with work, family and other commitments Donna never quite found the time to learn to quilt. Just days prior to her moving we set aside a weekend in December to teach her some basics of quilting. To utilize as much time as possible for that weekend we moved into Wanda’s quilting studio (formerly a rental suite in her heritage home) and went to work.  Donna was hooked and made us promise to get together every year to quilt for a weekend.  Lucky for us Donna has a share in her family’s cabin at Maple Beach in Pt. Roberts and is an awesome cook! As many as 8 of us gather for this fabulous weekend, having grown from 3 days to 5 days. Over the years we have had many people stop by for a look at our quilts as we like to hang them from the front porch and clothes line. It’s become an annual event for the residents of Maple Beach as they seem to anticipate what they will see as much as we anticipate being there. We have decided to celebrate our 10th retreat (2012)with a friendship quilt. Last September our mission for 2011 was to produce 8 of the same block depicting what this retreat means to us. We will share these blocks this September and when we return in 2012 we will have a show & tell of all completed quilts. The anticipation is building! Can’t wait to put out my sign “Gone Quilting.”
