September Block of the Month

All Right!! It’s 10 days until the BOM starts so I’m going to give you some basic information to help you get started. The poll question came out nearly even so we will take some of the mystery out of the BOM by telling you that this quilt will be STAR themed.

Each of the 9 blocks you will be making are going to be made up of two parts. The 1st part consists of a 6 ½” pieced block. For this portion of the block you will need to choose 3 colours. The background of these blocks will all be made with the same LIGHT colour. The design part of the block consists of 2 colours. These colours can be contrasting colours or 2 different shades of the same colour.

My version of this quilt is going to be scrappy. In my 6 ½” blocks I have the same light background but many different shades of blue for the design portion. One point to make about choosing your fabrics is the size of the motif. Remember you will be using some small pieces in the 6 ½” blocks so it is recommended that you use small motifs and tone on tones.

The 2nd part of this block consists of using 3 different colours added to the outside of the 6 ½” block to build it to 13.” Each of the 3 colours should have at least two different shades. You will add the first colour (medium-dark) to all four sides of the 6 ½” block. Then add the 2nd colour (light) to all 4 sides, finishing with the 3rd colour (medium-dark).  My scrappy version uses 15 different greens, yellows and blues.

Not just any pile of scraps

This basic information was posted to whet your appetite and the actual yardage amounts will be supplied in the next instalment. The block and each set of instructions will be posted for the first 10 days of the month. The instructions will then be removed.

Happy Quilting everyone, Valerie Raye
