On August 19th Joan, Ruth and I delivered the 2014 I Believe in Blue quilts to Canuck Place. It was the 4th delivery bringing our total to 67! It’s always a lot of fun bringing the quilts into Canuck Place as the staff there are happily waiting to see them. This year we had a lone meeting with Kim in the sun/play room as the outside gardens were being used. Kim took this opportunity to tell us a little more about Canuck Place’s 2nd provincial facility, the Dave Lede House in Abbotsford. They are hoping to have the building fully running in 2017. It is part of the Campus of Care which houses Matthew’s House and the Abbotsford Hospice. When it is fully operational Canuck Place will have 18 patient beds and 9 family suites available through the two locations.
In the 2012-13 annual report for Canuck Place there was mention about these quilts. “When you walk around the floors of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice you see evidence of the support and connection to the Vancouver Canucks. There is Trevor Linden’s signed jersey on the wall; a Canuck Place child’s project on the Sedin twins in the third floor school room; the beautiful quilts with the Canuck logos on the patient beds on the second floor clinical rooms…” And, as we were talking, phrases used often at Canuck Place brought inspiration for next years quilts–Courage Lives Here, Life is Worth Savouring and Live in the Moment. From the CPCH quick facts sheet: COURAGE- Whether life is measured in days, weeks, or months, children deserve the opportunity to learn, develop and grow. Canuck Place encourages each child to embrace life and believes in enhancing the quality of whatever time a child may have left by empowering them to live fully and joyfully. At Canuck Place, we savour life.
Again, Joan and I would like to thank everyone who has supported the I Believe in Blue quilt campaigns. We know how much they are appreciated by everyone. With the opening of the 2nd facility and the fact that the children and their families can take the quilts home we have assured Kim that we will continue to deliver quilts. In fact I’ve already opened up a Canuck Quilts 2015 file and designed the next quilt. To have a “Y” seam or not, that is the question! No worries, I’ll make sure everyone is happy with the pattern.
Happy Quilting…Valerie Raye
