It’s been 5 years since we started the campaign for quilts for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. When we deliver this latest batch of quilts we will have donated 83! We are thrilled that sponsors and quilters keep supporting this very worthy cause.
When we began this journey in 2011 we were as frantic as all the Vancouver Canucks hockey fans. They needed 16 wins to see the Stanley Cup come to Vancouver and we wanted to match each win with a quilt. That first year we waited until the game was won before the call went out for a new sponsor/quilter. The first quilt was started in mid April and the last finished at the end of July, 6 weeks longer than the actual playoffs! There was no plan beyond getting 16 quilts to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and celebrating the Vancouver Canucks winning that 16th game for the Stanley Cup. Well who knew we’d be making 66 more quilts over the next 4 years and still be waiting for the Stanley Cup to belong to the Canucks?!
After the 2nd campaign I was asked by quilters if we could start making the quilts before the playoffs began. That would give each quilter more time to be finish their quilt prior to spring and summer activities. They weren’t in this to see the Canucks win 16 games for a Stanley Cup, they were in it for the children! For the first two years most of the quilts were Canuck player themed, using names and numbers of favourite players. Over the last couple of years we’ve made use of hearts, butterflies, inspirational words and fabrics. This works well because not everyone accessing Canuck Place Children’s Hospice is a hockey fan. We still use Canuck colours but now there is a greater variety of appliques, especially those that work well for girls. This year we have two quilts dedicated to Pat Quinn who was instrumental in getting the Vancouver Canucks organization involved in helping children and their families. They are both made using hearts for butterflies and shamrocks. Remember, these quilts are made with the express purpose of giving them to the children and families to take home with them. Here is an excerpt from the 2014 thank you card, “Recently we offered one to a parent of a young boy. She was deeply touched and promptly put it over him in his wheelchair. You could tell by the look on his face that he really like it.” Check out the 2015 I Believe in Blue album on our Facebook page to see the quilts being created.
A very loud shout out to: Mickey & Debra, Patricia, Donna A, Doris, Wanda, Kathy, Liz, Ruth, Denise, Judy & James, Lorraine, Juli, Lynn, Jackie, Angela, Jeanne, Jane, Jude & Lori. Joan, Jackie and I will be having a quilting marathon in July with delivery day in August. It’s one of the best weekends of the year for me.
Happy Quilting…Valerie Raye
