September 2017: A tub of Merle’s fabrics arrived at the cabin from Salmon Arm. The plan was to get started on making four bunk quilts and one double bed quilt. We chose to make two Maple Leaf themed bunk quilts and two Log Cabin bunk quilts. The first double bed quilt would be a Churn Dash.
At the time, we’d been quilting here for 15 years. We’ve made three charity quilts. That would be one quilt between all of us for each chosen charity. This was different. These quilts were being made in memory of our good friend Merle, using her fabrics to complete her dream of having quilts on all the beds of the Maple Beach cabin. There was lots of love and energy put into this weekends stitching. It was totally cool, peaceful, and healing. We had one Maple Leaf quilt flimsy complete and many blocks done for the other four quilts.
In February (2018) Pat, Kathy, Joan and I gathered in Tsawwassen to have a quilting and binding marathon. Joan had previously quilted Jackie’s Log Cabin quilt with the Baptist Fan. While Joan, Pat & Kathy took turns quilting the other quilts I started the binding.
<—Joan, the master quilter here. The pantograph we used for the Maple Leaf quilts was appropriately titled, “Blowin’ in the Wind.” Kathy —-> takes a turn. We got the Maple Leaf quilts done and two quilts bound before Pat and I had to catch the ferry back to the Island…there was a big blow coming and we managed to get home before the sailings were cancelled.
^We pieced and quilted from September 2017 to February 2018. On May 5th we took the five completed quilts to Maple Beach for the annual opening of the cabin.
What a gloriously sunny day. Friends & family gathered to open the cabin and see the quilts.<–Both of these–> quilts are log cabins. So very different but so very beautiful.
There is a double bed in one inside bedroom and two sets of bunk beds in the other inside bedroom. For those who cared, the Maple Leaf quilts were placed on the top bunk and the Log Cabins on the bottom.
We have one more quilt to be made. We will do it this coming September when we gather for our 16th annual Maple Beach quilt retreat. We’ve chosen the Friendship Star with a blue and yellow colour scheme. It will be the porch bed quilt.
Happy Quilting…Valerie Raye
